Company helps RCR Pictures capture rights to English-language remake of Latin American action film
Dave Brown, head of Artist International Motion Picture & Television Literary, the management division of Hollywood Studios International (HSI), has brokered a deal with Robin Schorr’s RCR Pictures to remake the acclaimed Venezuelan hit LA HORA CERO as an English-language thriller set in the United States. Brown negotiated the deal with Schorr on behalf of the film’s original director/co-writer and AI client, Diego Velasco.
Velasco, an award winning Venezuelan-American director wrote the original film with his wife, Carolina Paiz, who is also an AI client. The pair will executive produce the remake with LA HORA CERO producers Sergio Aguero and Chris Ferguson with Ray Bitar of RCR Pictures. RCR founder Robin Schorr will produce, with RCR colleague Jenna Glazier co-producing.
In the original, set in Venezuela, a hit man takes a hospital full of people hostage in an attempt to save the lives of his wounded girlfriend and her child. Highlighting the volatility of the world in which LA HORA CERO is set, members of cast and crew were held up at gunpoint during filming in one of the most dangerous sections of Caracas, Venezuela.
Yet, filmmakers persevered and the movie was released in 2010 and went on to win numerous festival awards on its way to becoming the highest-grossing feature film in Venezuelan cinematic history. This year, the film won the coveted Audience Favorite Award at the 15th Annual Los Angeles International Latino FilmFestival. Producers promise a similar treatment, tailored to the tastes of modern American audiences, with the English-language version.
“We always believed the story to be a universal one,” comments Diego Velasco. “In its essence, it is a love story set in a chaotic world of polarizing politics and unattainable health care. We’re thrilled to help produce the English remake and help bring new, original stories to American audiences, and we’re incredibly lucky to have RCR Pictures, Robin Schorr, and Jenna Glazier spearheading the effort.”
