BEVERLY HILLS, December 1, 2010 – The Kids Are All Right, produced in association with Artist International and Executive Produced by Steven Saxton, CEO of AI’s parent company, Hollywood Studios International, has been nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay. In addition, two actors of its acclaimed ensemble cast, Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo, have been nominated for Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Male respectively, resulting in the film garnering the second most nominations in the 2011 Spirit Awards. “This movie has already exceeded our expectations and it’s very gratifying to see everyone’s hard work recognized,” said Saxton. “We are so pleased to have been a part of this exceptional film and these nominations are more than validating,” said Joel Newton, Artist International’s Managing Director and a Co-Producer of the film.
These recent nominations cap off an incredible year for The Kids Are All Right, which was released by Focus Features and dubbed “the breakout hit of the summer.” The film grossed more than $20 million in U.S. box office revenue while racking up near unanimous praise from critics and moviegoers alike.
Director Lisa Cholodenko received two nominations for her comedy-drama about a lesbian couple and their children who shake up the family by bringing their biological father into their life. She is nominated as Best Director as well as for Best Screenplay alongside co-writer Stuart Blumberg.
The Independent Spirit Awards, given out by Film Independent, celebrates films made outside of the major Hollywood studios with budgets of less than $20 million. This year’s nominations were culled from 220 submissions. Joel McHale will host the 2011 Film Independent Sprit Awards in Santa Monica, CA on Saturday, February 26 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The awards show will air exclusively that night on IFC at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
